Main purpose of the role

The Buyer will be responsible for sourcing new merchandise and reviewing existing ones to ensure products remain competitive. By fully understanding customer needs, the Buyer will maximise profits and provide a commercially viable range of merchandise at competitive prices. Keeping up to date with market trends and reacting to changes in demand are key elements of the role.

Minimum requirements:
  • A relevant diploma/degree
  • At least 5 years retail buying experience
  • Prior experience with maintaining customer relationships as well as influencing decision-makers
  • Prepared to travel, drive, and engage in considerable physical activity
  • Specific fashion retail knowledge
  • Proficiency in relevant software packages and applications

  • Good understanding of planning and the logistics process relating to product
  • Ability to communicate and drive optimal processes and information
  • Sound analytical, organisational, interpersonal and negotiation skills
  • Fashion insights, clothing manufacturing and supply
  • A solid understanding and an eye for commercial merchandise
  • Strong affiliation to systems, utilising them to increase productivity in line with the business strategy
  • Competency in all computer packages, i.e. Outlook, Excel (Advanced), PowerPoint
  • Strong customer focus with a trader instinct
  • Ability to think strategically and sound industry knowledge
  • People Management skills to drive a team towards reaching targets and creating a positive working culture


Duties and responsibilities:

  • Construct the brand and product strategy for the buying category in relation to the merchandise and business strategy
  • Conduct SWOT and competitor analysis, brand and product analysis
  • Trend and industry knowledge and insight
  • Combine all analysis and forecasts to build an applicable product range
  • Source and secure merchandise to ensure optimal product offering
  • Working closely with the planners to agree on a sales plan and track sales to budget and plan promotions accordingly
  • Regularly review performance indicators, e.g. sales, costs, stock turns and profitability
  • Managing plans for stock levels
  • Reacting to changes in demand
  • Reacting to changes in logistics
  • Meeting suppliers and negotiating terms of contract
  • Maintaining relationships with existing suppliers and sourcing new suppliers for future products
  • Liaising with other departments within the organisation to ensure projects are completed
  • Writing reports and forecasting sales levels
  • Presenting new ranges to senior retail managers
  • Analyse and interpret data to improve business using dashboards and reports
  • Managing site Merchandise
  • Manage team of buyers and buyers assistants to synergize department to reach optimal levels of performance
